how EMDR works in the brain

Understanding what’s happening inside your brain is the first real step toward healing. We're going to break down the neuroscience behind traumatic memories and explore how therapies like EMDR and Brainspotting leverage the brain's own processing power to help you recover. And yes, this process works just as effectively through online sessions.

When Prince Harry talked openly about his experience with EMDR therapy, he brought a powerful healing technique into the mainstream conversation.

It's a situation so many people can relate to.

A single traumatic memory gets lodged in your mind, replaying over and over again and disrupting daily life. At Whole Life Counselling, we use advanced therapies like EMDR and a related technique, Brainspotting, to help your brain finally process these stuck moments correctly (and you can do it right from the comfort of your own home).

So, how does EMDR work in the brain? To answer that, we first need to look at the brain science explaining why trauma can linger for so long.

The EMDR Protocol: A Structured 8-Phase Journey

EMDR therapy is so much more than just eye movements.

It’s an eight-phase journey that provides a clear, predictable path to healing. That very structure is what makes the process so effective.

We begin with the first two phases: History and Preparation. Our priority is simple. We need to know you feel safe and ready for the work. Once that foundation is set, we can move on to Assessment and Desensitization, using bilateral stimulation, which many people associate with EMDR, to help your brain reprocess memories. From there, we work on installing positive beliefs, and a Body Scan checks for any lingering physical tension.

Every session concludes with Closure. You always leave feeling grounded and safe.

But how do we know it’s working?

The final phase, Re-evaluation, gives us that answer. We use tools such as the Subjective Units of Disturbance (SUD) scale to track your distress levels from one session to the next, providing a clear, measurable picture of your progress. A concrete way to see change. Most of these sessions last about one hour.

This reliable framework offers a path toward profound healing, though other modalities can also effectively target trauma in the brain.

Beyond EMDR: How Brainspotting Targets the 'Felt Sense' of Trauma

Another powerful neurobiological approach is Brainspotting. Its core principle is simple yet profound: ‘where you look affects how you feel.’

Our therapists help you find a specific eye position, a ‘Brainspot’, that correlates with the activation of a traumatic or emotionally charged memory, tapping directly into the issue’s ‘felt sense’. While EMDR follows a more structured protocol, Brainspotting uses a client-led, focused mindfulness approach that allows your brain’s natural healing capacity to take over. It’s not a replacement for EMDR. Instead, we view it as a highly effective alternative or complementary tool. Because both modalities operate at a deep neurobiological level, they adapt well to an online therapy setting, making healing more accessible than ever.

The Science Behind Trauma: Why Memories Get Stuck

When we experience trauma, our brain's normal processing system can become overwhelmed. During a traumatic event, the amygdala (our brain's alarm system) goes into overdrive while the hippocampus (responsible for filing memories) essentially goes offline. This creates a perfect storm where memories get trapped in their raw, unprocessed form.

Think of it like a computer file that gets corrupted during saving. The information is there, but it's fragmented and can't integrate properly with the rest of your system. These unprocessed memories continue to trigger the same fight-or-flight response as if the trauma were happening right now, even years later.

This is where EMDR and Brainspotting come in. Both therapies help restart that natural processing system, allowing your brain to finally file these memories where they belong – in the past. The bilateral stimulation used in EMDR actually mimics the rapid eye movements we experience during REM sleep, when our brains naturally process daily experiences. It's like giving your brain a second chance to do what it couldn't do during the initial trauma.

Important Considerations: Is This Therapy Right for You?

We’ve seen how transformative EMDR and Brainspotting can be, but these approaches aren't the right tools for everyone. Between appointments, you might notice that emotions feel closer to the surface or that you have more vivid dreams. This is a normal, healthy part of your brain processing everything. It’s actually a good sign.

That said, this focused work may not be appropriate if you lack a stable support system. It’s also a big ask if you don’t have established coping skills to navigate the emotions that will definitely arise.

A foundation of safety is essential.

Some practitioners remain cautious, and that's understandable; they may prefer familiar talk-therapy models or simply lack the specialized training these methods require. At Whole Life Counselling, we believe in a careful, measured approach. We advise clients to protect their time after a session. Avoid scheduling a stressful meeting or a major social event right afterward. Your only job is to allow your system to rest and integrate what you’ve uncovered, paving the way for lasting change.

Key Takeaways: Reprocessing the Past for a Fuller Future

Trauma is a brain injury, not a life sentence. And it can heal.

Therapies like EMDR and Brainspotting are evidence-based tools designed to work with your brain’s own capacity to reprocess painful, stuck memories. With a quarter-century of research to back it up (a solid track record, to say the least), EMDR stands as a credible treatment for creating lasting change.

You do not have to carry this weight by yourself.

At Whole Life Counselling, we make healing more accessible by offering these therapies both in person and online. Wherever you are. If you’re ready to move forward, we invite you to contact us today and see how our team can help you reclaim your future.
